Recommendations regarding Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) on Eaton NRX and ICCB Breakers

In order to ensure your safety, Eaton provides the following recommendations for hazardous energy isolation of downstream circuits (“Lockout / Tagout”) using N-frame and R-frame NRX and PD-ICCB Drawout Circuit Breakers. These recommendations are only applicable to Drawout Circuit Breakers.

  1. Open the circuit breaker and rack the breaker out of the CONNECT Position. Eaton recommends securing the breaker in the TEST position.
  2. Secure the black levering mechanism door closed by pulling the white padlock retainer (located to the right of the door) out toward the user and applying an approved padlock and tag to the padlock retainer.
  3. Verify that the padlock is secure on the padlock retainer and that the levering door cannot be opened. In this case, the breaker cannot be racked to CONNECT, or racked to DISCONNECT and replaced, so the downstream circuit is securely isolated.
Warning: Do not rely on the levering door interlock to prevent the breaker from closing. Locking the levering door open with the padlock retainer may not provide full protection against closing and energizing the circuit if the breaker is in CONNECT. The levering door could potentially close even with a lock attached and enable the breaker to be closed.

Eaton recommends that these precautions are incorporated in work instructions or procedures for maintenance and/or Lockout / Tagout related to NRX Drawout Circuit Breakers.

Another approved method of energy isolation with NRX Drawout Circuit Breakers is the use of optional Levering Mechanism Key Interlock accessories to secure the circuit breaker in the TEST position. In addition, lockout of NRX circuit breakers in the open position include optional Eaton metal-framed pad-lockable pushbutton cover accessories (with the safe-off feature which holds the OFF button depressed), internal mechanism key interlock accessories, external mechanism key interlock accessories.

Eaton is also advising users to mark NRX and Power Defense Drawout Insulated Case Circuit Breakers with the provided label near the levering mechanism door as shown in the picture below:
