Learn about how Eaton technologies have shaped Singapore’s power and meet the Singapore team

What was the power management industry in Singapore like back in the 80s?

Whether you worked for a manufacturer, distributor or contractor, almost everyone knew one another. Having coffee with competitors was the norm, although our discussions were kept at arm’s length. This was prior to the Internet age when we had to mingle face to face. When I joined Eaton, I wasn’t nervous at all as the industry is so small, I already knew who I’d be working with.

How has your work evolved over the past two decades?

Back in the early eighties, I had to manually prepare sales offers with a typewriter and fax it to customers. If the offer had to be revised multiple times, it could take up to a month to close the sale. Back then, we didn’t have handphones and used a pager. Now, with the handphone, we’re constantly connected, even while on holiday!

In response to these technological developments, the power management industry has evolved to meet these changing needs. For example, we started offering IoT-enabled products to customers in the last decade. It’s a dynamic industry with many opportunities for growth.

How would you describe Eaton’s culture?

Even though we serve different market segments or internal roles, the various teams at Eaton always help each other whenever potential problems or issues arise. This makes work easy and gets things done. This “One Eaton” spirit still rings true today - customers can reach out to one group and would be referred to the right colleague for follow up.

What was a turning point in your Eaton journey?

The first was about twenty years ago, when the company sponsored me to further my studies in recognition of my contribution to Cutler Hammer Pte Ltd, an Eaton legacy brand. There was no bond attached, which was against the norm then. I was also given the opportunity to be sent to different factories, offices, and courses for self-improvement.

Midway through my career, I began to develop a growing sense of inertia and felt that I needed a change. I’m glad that I had valuable advice from Curtis Lim, Mark Croft, KH Ang and many colleagues who encouraged me to look for opportunities within Eaton. Their guidance gave me new perspectives and opened up new possibilities for my career. It’s been eight years since then, and I am still happily with Eaton.
